All types of curtains need to be cleaned on a regular basis to maintain their refined and quality condition. Aside from vacuuming your curtains from top to bottom every week to get rid of dust and dirt onto them, it is also essential to wash your curtains at least every few years no matter what fabric they are made of. Doing this will not only make your curtains clean, but it also makes your curtains look 100% new.
Although it may seem like it is one of the most laborious and tiring household chores, cleaning your curtains is actually easier than what you think. Your curtains collect a lot of dirt and dust so maybe it’s time to give them some TLC. Believe it or not, cleaning your curtains religiously will make them last longer and look beautifully polished when hung. If you don’t include this in your cleaning routine, some parts of the fabric may rot and be damaged which might lead you to buy new ones.
Since we don’t want you to ditch your curtains due to some reasons, try and follow the hassle-free guide we listed below to help you get your curtains look as good as new.
Step 1
Remove all hooks and curtain weights from the curtains. Make sure to loosen the heading tape to freely release the curtains. When removed, shake the fabric to remove dust.
Step 2
Before you finally wash the curtains, you must check first its manufacturer’s care instructions. Then stretch them flat and use a soft brush or lint roller to remove dust from the curtains.
Take note that there are some materials like lined fabric that can be easily damaged by water, so it’s better to always check the label first before proceeding to washing or dry cleaning.
Step 3
Curtains made from fabrics such as cotton, nylon, or polyester can go a long way to be machine-washed without issue. They can also be hand-washed. But before washing, make sure to spot stains and if there is, treat it with a stain remover. Then rub it gently with an old toothbrush.
Step 4
Soak the curtains in cold water with dissolved powder of detergent for at least five minutes. Make sure to use a detergent intended for heavy and delicate fabrics. Then wash them carefully.
Step 5
After washing, rinse the curtains thoroughly. Squeeze out the excess water as much as possible.
Step 6
Iron the curtains while they are slightly wet. Hang them while still damp to maintain its right length.
Step 7
Before you put the curtains back to the window, clean the curtain tracks and windows first to prevent its dirt from passing to your newly washed curtains.
